The Hayber, McKenna & Dinsmore was proud to be on the Host Committee for an event held Wednesday April 13, 2016 and organized by the Campaign for Paid Family Leave the Hartford YWCA.  Two nationally recognized authors and advocates, Jessica Shortall and Ellen Bravo held a discussion about the need for Paid Family Leave in the United States.   Jessica Shortall is the author of Work. Pump. Repeat, a look at the challenges of returning to the workplace in the months following the birth of a child and is perhaps best known for her recent TEDtalk  that focused on the need for paid family leave.  Ellen Bravo is an author and the Executive Director of Family Values @ Work, a national coalition leading the movement for family friendly policies in the workplace.   The discussion was filmed for an upcoming documentary on the need for paid family leave in the US. It was a great night and the stories shared during the event demonstrated the real harm that the lack of paid family leave has on all employees.

Currently, there is a bill pending in the Connecticut General Assembly that would provide all employees who work for an employer with two or more employees to take up to 12 weeks of paid family or medical leave.  As drafted, there is no requirement that an employer fund this leave.  In addition to providing paid leave, if passed, this bill will greatly expand the protections in our current family and medical leave laws as well as expand the definition of family members covered under the policy.  Two recent polls of Connecticut residents show overwhelming support by Connecticut voters for Paid Family & Medical Leave. If this is an issue of concern to you, you should contact your state legislator and urge him or her to support this bill.  To learn more about the Connecticut Campaign for Paid Family Leave, go to https://paidfamilyleavect.org.
