Can my employer force me to work overtime?
Generally, yes. Mandatory overtime is legal. In a state that applies the theory of “at-will” employment, employers can impose many conditions on employees and choose to terminate the employees if they cannot conform to the employer’s conditions.
If, however, you have a medical condition that prevents you from working more than 40 hours per week, you may be entitled to a reasonable accommodation in the form of being excused from working the required overtime.
