Termination Due to Affair

Can my employer fire me for messing around while he’s on vacation?

Yes, generally speaking, but just for reference, there are some laws that regulate employer surveillance of employees.

In Connecticut, employers may not operate any electronic surveillance device or system in “areas designed for the health or personal comfort of the employees or for safeguarding of their possessions.”  Further, employers may not record or listen into employment contract negotiations.

If an employer wishes to monitor an employee’s activities and communications, it must give the employee written notice telling him what types of activities and communication will be monitored.  This is always the case unless the employer has “reasonable grounds” to believe that the employee is violating the law, or creating a hostile work environment.

If you think your employer may have violated your rights under these laws, contact us.
